Eyes Closed

I saw something that knocked me sideways at the weekend. As I walked through my local town centre a little girl walked towards me, hand in hand with her father. She had the most astonishing grin on her face and exuberant spring in her step. It was only then that I noticed her eyes were completely closed shut! I turned to drink in this extraordinary sight as it casually passed me by knowing that I had just seen something truly remarkable.

In this self imposed darkness, this little girl had absolutely no idea where she was going, was completely unbothered by the crowds that surged around her and appeared to be thoroughly enjoying being led securely, hand in hand by the one she trusted most in all the world.

This little girl reminded me so much of Anna, who I read about recently in a book called, ‘Mister God, this is Anna.’ It’s a true story about the author, Fynn, finding an abandoned little girl on a step, in the gloom of ‘pre-war’ foggy, London. Shivering and hungry, he cautiously picks her up and takes her home to his family – who quite simply love her back to life. But the love they pour into Anna cannot be matched by the love this little girl pours out in return. Anna has a precocious, unprecedented understanding of ‘Mister God’ and His love for us that causes her to dance and sing and wonder in the light of His love everyday. This is typical Anna speak…

‘Fynn, you can love better than any people that ever was, and so can I can’t I? But Mister God is different. You see, Fynn, people can only love outside and can only kiss outside, but Mister God can love you right inside, and Mister God can kiss you right inside, so it’s different. Mister God ain’t like us; we are a little bit like Mister God, but not much yet.’

The little girl I saw on the high street brought me sharply back to the point. I had been worrying about so much. Anna never did this. She was holding on tight to ‘Mister God.’ Eyes closed. She was enjoying the ride. She was held securely by the one and only ‘High King of Heaven’ who doesn’t just kiss on the outside like we do – who kisses on the inside!

How does this help me as a creative? Well it enables me to relax and abandon the marks I make, knowing that each one is going somewhere and will ultimately hit the mark, even when it feels like they are hidden in darkness and are far from perfect. The results I yearn for are ‘Mister God’s’ heart for me. His ‘inside’ kisses encourage me and I know we will get there together.

As I yearn and ache for so much more I want to be like Anna and the little girl in the high street, eyes closed in worship and wonder, knowing that ‘everywhere I place my foot is mine’ and that I walk in the sunshine of the favour of my Fathers face, everyday of my life.
